Driving Transparency in Product-Specific Carbon Emission Calculations

At Sandvik, we are committed to advancing sustainability and enabling a low-carbon future for the mining and rock processing industries. A key part of this commitment is increasing transparency around the carbon footprint of our equipment, empowering our customers to make informed decisions and reduce their environmental impact.

To support this, we are systematically integrating product-specific carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emission calculations across our equipment portfolio. Initially, we are introducing average CO₂e data for selected equipment models, with plans to expand coverage across our full equipment offering. By 2030, our goal is to make this data publicly available online, ensuring easy access to emissions information throughout the product lifecycle.

Our calculations adopt a lifecycle perspective, offering two complementary views:

  • Cradle-to-Gate: Includes raw material extraction, component manufacturing, upstream transportation, and our own production processes.
  • Cradle-to-Grave: Extends beyond manufacturing to include downstream transportation, product use, maintenance, and end-of-life disposal.

This initiative is part of our broader sustainability strategy, which focuses on innovation, resource efficiency, and circularity. By providing verified emissions data, we not only enhance transparency but also support our customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.

To ensure the highest level of accuracy and reliability, our methodology has been validated by the third-party expert Sweco. This approach is applied across all Sandvik equipment divisions.

Our commitment to transparency is a key step toward a more sustainable mining industry. By embedding emissions data into our product information, we enable our customers to reduce their environmental impact while driving efficiency and circularity across the value chain.
