SANDVIK IMPLEMENTS LONG-TERM WEAR PARTS MODEL AT ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI

Sandvik has deployed at the AngloGold Ashanti mining company’s Crixás unit in Goiás wear plates of tungsten carbide model HX900, used in the transfer chutes on the crushing area. AngloGold Ashanti, one of the world’s largest gold producers, has innovation and security as its core values. Therefore, the company seeks to adopt the best practices and components that result in good performance and safety for its operations.

The plates were installed in August 2016 aiming to improve the performance of the actions and increase the safety of the workers. The model has been used in areas with more pronounced wear and in strategic points, in which the difficulty of access and the ergonomic condition are unfavorable.

After 395 days of operation, the HX900 had only 3 mm of thickness loss and little edge erosion, a 26 times greater result than 400 HB hardened steel.
The inspection conducted in September 2017 estimated that wear parts would have an additional of 120 days of service life. The forecast was exceeded and, in January 2018, reached 510 days of service life. The plates are still in operation.

In the comminution process, the gold ore needs to be transferred to other stages. The HX900 must withstand the high impacts and, particularly, the severe abrasive conditions caused by the around the clock operation.

Until the AngloGold Ashanti unit, Sandvik conducted tests in a variety of applications and all demonstrated huge gains in service life and reduced operating costs.

In addition to reducing operational costs, the HX900 material is also a product that meets the constant search for the best health and safety practices at work.

"Besides to directly reducing operating costs, there are cost reductions that are indirect and harder to account for, but which have a major impact on maintenance costs, such as the cost of downtime for wear material replacement. Having fewer interventions for replacement reduces drastically the exposure of workers to risk, since this type of material is typically installed in hard-to-reach places and confined spaces" says Robert Mendes, Sandvik Product specialist.
